Ruth Cocksedge

Chartered Counselling Psychologist

BABCP Accredited Cognitive and Behavioural Psychotherapist

EMDR Therapist

About Me

Ruth has over 20 years experience in senior positions in psychological therapy, psychology, mental health, higher education and clinical supervision. She is highly specialist in cognitive behaviour therapy, and practices Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing therapy, EMDR - a specialist therapeutic method for working with post-traumatic stress, and anxiety problems that include upsetting memories. She is also trained in person-centred counselling, and in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and integrates knowledge and skills from these therapeutic approaches into her practice.

Ruth has experience of working with people who have had previous unsuccessful psychological interventions, and with health professionals who need psychological help. She can provide consultations, sometimes known as assessments, to make recommendations and facilitate choices about psychological therapies.

Ruth is very experienced in helping people with mood problems such as depression, bipolar disorder, and emotion regulation difficulties, including disordered eating. In terms of anxiety problems, she can help with specific phobias, such as driving phobia and fear of public speaking, post traumatic stress, obsessive compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, health anxiety, and social anxiety.

Ruth takes a collaborative and appreciative approach to CBT, drawing on new research findings in positive psychology and compassion, to work with the strengths and resources available to both the client and the therapist. Feedback from clients, trainees and supervisees supports that she has exceptional skills in establishing effective interpersonal relationships that are the bedrock of the practice of evidence based psychological therapies.

Ruth’s recent research experience has involved collaborating as local investigator on an international study with the University of Southampton, the University of Surrey and London Southbank University in a feasibility study to test a novel adjunct to CBT for depression, known as Resilience Training. The international collaborator was Dr Christine Padesky.

Ruth has been providing individual and group clinical supervision to experienced and trainee counsellors, CBT psychotherapists, counselling psychologists, and mental health nurses for over 20 years.
